Hardwired ISPs Go the Way of the Land Line

There was a time when land line telephone service was standard in every household with telephone access. That era is now effectively gone; the land line has been replaced in many households with cellular service. Cell phones are more convenient because of their portability. Given advancements in satellite internet and portable internet technologies, hardwired Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and land line telephone service may soon share the same fate.

Wireless internet service based on cellular signals provides a few benefits that hardwired ISPs just can't keep up with. The biggest benefit is easily the portability. Many of these portable internet services rely on a USB dongle to provide service to the user. This means it can be picked up and taken on the go, so users can access their internet service even when they're far from home. For someone to take a hardwired ISP with them, they'd have to run an endless series of routers!

Another benefit of wireless internet service is its availability. While cable high-seed internet access from cable companies and phone companies is still scarce in rural areas, mobile internet providers can give service to users even if they’re in remote places. The signal range of satellite internet and cellular towers means high-speed internet access is available to thousands more.

Wireless internet is also becoming faster. With the deployment of 4G for T-Mobile 4g phones, networks by cellular companies, wireless internet is now faster than many DSL connections, and even some cable connections. Upgrading the speed of cable or DSL internet service is a costly and time-consuming process. With cellular networks, deployment of higher speeds can be done in a relatively short amount of time and at a lower cost. There is also more incentive to upgrade cellular service, as the same connection is also behind the current smartphone craze. Thanks to this, we can expect cell networks upgrade faster than hardwired ISPs. In a few years, it's entirely possible that mobile internet service will be faster than its hardwired counterpart.

Because of all of this, more and more subscribers are opting to cut the ties with their traditional ISP and opt for mobile service. With the advantages it has over traditional service, it's not hard to see why. Just a few years from now, we'll likely look at hardwired ISPs in the same light that we view land line phone service.
